Project Details:
Tropical Storm Irene, August 28, 2011, destroyed the existing 12.5’ by 8’ plate arch culvert in the South Branch of the Tweed River, collapsing the pipe and washing out the road. This cut off the northerly access to Stage Road leaving only access from the south at Coffee House Road. The project resulted in a 24’ bridge span over the river, with a 30’ travel way. The bridge is a concrete deck bridge with cast-in-place abutments and footings, bearing on bedrock. The bridge was critically close to Rt. 100 requiring special considerations to allow school bus turning movement.
The project required extensive negotiations and permitting through the River Management Program (Stream Alterations Permit) as well as VTrans because construction was within the state Right of Way.
