When DEW Construction Corporation competed to design and permit the Rutland Campus for the Community College of Vermont, they teamed with Enman • Kesselring Consulting Engineers and Banwell Architects to deliver the new project at the corner of West and Wales Street.
The downtown location presented several design challenges including the need to merge five urban parcels, in the core of Rutland City, and demolish three blighted structures. The team worked in concert with the Division of Historic Preservation to incorporate features of one historic structure into the CCV Campus, and worked with the State Site Management Section for remediation for a longtime hazardous waste site.
The Campus is situated on a steep slope, and is surrounded by several buildings constructed in very close proximity. With stormwater runoff already a problem in the downtown, strict standards were imposed by the City for stormwater management. Since space was at a premium, stormwater was managed with the installation of a subsurface stormwater system to detain and reduce peak runoff from the CCV Campus thereby reducing the impact on the downtown area.
The CCV campus opened in time for the spring 2012 semester, and the ribbon cutting was held on February 2, 2012. There, Don Wells, President DEW Construction, commended Enman • Kesselring Consulting Engineers for their efforts in bringing the project to fruition on time and on budget.
